Lesson 2- Navigating HyperStudio

In order to learn how to start using HyperStudio, you need to learn how to navigate around through this software.
Navigation Options

Navigate using the Move Menu

One way to move around or navigate within HyperStudio is to use the Move Menu.
Notice how the Move Menu gives you several options to help you navigate to different cards in a stack
Move Menu Options are:
Back will jump the user back to the last card visited.
Home will take the user to the Home Stack.
First Card will take the user to the first card in the current stack.
Previous Card will take the user to the card previous to the current card.
Next Card will take the user to the very next card in the stack.
Last Card will take the user to the very last card in the stack.
Jump to Card... will allow the user to enter the number of the desired card destination.
Find Text... This option will allow the user to search for specific cards that have text objects containing certain.
Card Numbers
The first, next, previous, and last card are all relative to the sequence of cards as they are created. As each card is created, it has a card number at the top of the card on the title bar.
Card Order
The card order influences where the Back and Previous Options work. Clicking on Previous or Next will go to the card that is before or after the card you are in ...in card order. Clicking on the Back option, you will go back to the last card you visited. The last card in sequence may or may not be the same card.
Cards may be created in sequence of the way the user needs to follow them or buttons can be directed to go to a specific card if it is created out of order. You can try to create the cards in sequential order but this can get complicated, especially if you make a new card that is out of order of the way the user needs to go through the stack.
In the storyboard below, cards 1-3 were created in order of the way they will be followed by the user. Then buttons were used to pick the "next" card the user will need to go to. Because buttons can change the sequence that the user can travel through the cards in the stack, the previous or next card may not be the next card number.

Navigating using the Storyboard

The Storyboard will allow you to see the linear order of all the cardsin the stack. Go to Extras>Storyboard. Thumbnails (small mini size images) of all the cards in your stack will appear.

You can click on any card and then either go to the card, delete the card, or print the card. Just click on the desired card and then click on GO TO CARD, DELETE, or PRINT. You can also double-click on the selected card to view it. Be sure the Storyboard box is moved out of the way so you can see if that is the card you want to go to. Just click on the blue title bar and hold your mouse button down while you drag the box over to see the card underneath the Storyboard box. When you are satisfied of the card you want to go to, click ok.
You can also drag and move the cards any card that may be needed to be in a different card position.
When creating new cards, you may move the cards around in a randomly different order than they were first created. You can link any card to another card in the stack regardless of whether it is the NEXT card in sequential order. You can see the card order of the way they were created in the image of the storyboard .
You can also see the cards in that liner sequential order when you use keyboard shortcut for navigating through the cards in the stack. Using the Control button (CTRL) and the < or > keys, you will see the cards in the sequential order the same way you would view them in the storyboard.

Navigating using Keyboard Shortcut Keys

You can also use keyboard shortcut keys to move forward or backward to different cards within the stack. To move using the keyboard, hold down the Control button (CTRL) and click on the < key to go back and the > key to go forward. Using these keys will allow you to move quickly through the cards in the stack

Important !

Be careful not to move back and forth, changing directions too quickly, as it may cause HyperStudio to crash or close down. If this happens and you have not recently saved the stack, you will lose any changes made since your last save.

Navigating Using Buttons

You can also navigate using buttons. When you are using the "hand' or Browse tool, you can use a button that has actions applied to go to another card OR you can use the shortcut cuts on the keyboard (hold the CTRL button and press the < or > key depending on which direction you want to go in the order the cards are as they were created. To use a button you can go to the Next or Previous card in card order or pick a specific card by going to Go to Another Card.
When you select Another card... you will see the Move to card box which allows you to go forward or backwards in card order to choose the card you would like to go to with the selected button.
You are adding an action to another card when you click on the selected button. This may be a displayed by using text such as Back or Next or using an icon like the arrow.
If there is no button on the card, you can use the keyboard shortcuts or the Move menu and go Back to the last card visited. You can use either method of navigation whether in Browse mode (the hand) or Edit mode (the arrow) when you are working in HyperStudio.
You can resize or move a button or text object by clicking on the object, the cursor arrow will turn into a four-way arrow when the cursor goes over the object or button. To move the object, click on it and hold down the mouse button, drag it to the desired location and release the mouse button. To resize the object or button, click on the object/button and you will see a moving red line of dashes ------- that are called "Moving Ants" in HyperStudio.

Move the 4-way cursor over the broken line that borders the object/button until it turns into a 2-way arrow . When you see the 2-way arrow, click the left mouse button, hold it down and drag it either up/down or right/left to resize the button or object. As a text object is resized, the text will move to fit the size and shape of the text box. Resizing your button may depend on the amount of space on the card for the button. View the video on How to Resize Objects & Buttons to see how this works.

Getting Ready for the Practice Session
The Practice Session will be using the move menu, control/<> keys, and the storyboard to navigate in the stack. You can practice adding a button and selecting the card to go to next, then see if it works by clicking on the Browse tool . Don't forget you can go to Move>Back to go to the last card you were on.
There are 2 practice sessions listed below. Go to the next page to start the first session on using the Move Menu and Keyboard Shortcut Keys to navigate. Practice session 2 is on Navigating Using Buttons.
Instructions to guide you through the practice stacks are available on the Practice session 1 and Practice session 2 on the next two Web pages. The instructions are also within the HyperStudio Practice stack. Printable instructions are also available to use along with the provided practice stack or you can decide to launch HyperStudio on your own and practice that way.
The following practice sessions for this lesson are:
Practice Session 1: Navigate Using the Move Menu, Keyboard Shortcut Keys, and the Storyboard
Practice Session 2: Navigate Using Buttons
Each practice stack will also be available along with printable instructions on the follow pages of instruction for each practice session. If you need to review the procedure for saving and accessing a practice stack, click on this link: Saving and Accessing Practice Stacks
Links below are provided for the practice stacks for Practice Session 1 and 2. The practice stack, printable instructions, and instructional video are available on the practice session pages. The next page will begin Practice Session 1 on navigating options which will follow by accessing Practice Session 2 completing the practice sessions for Lesson 2.
