| Title & Menu Bar |
 |
| Title Bar |
 |
| The Title bar is at the very top of the card and displays the name of the stack and what card number the card is in the stack. If the stack has not been named it will say "Untitled". When you first launch HyperStudio, you will see this Tip of the Day card, giving you various tips about HyperStudio. Once you have completed the stack and it is ready for the intended user, the card number may not be displayed on the title bar. |
| Menu Bar |
 |
| Underneath the Title bar is the Menu Bar is located underneath the Title bar which has the name of the stack and the stack number. The Menu bar displays the HyperStudio menu names. |
 |
| Menu Title Features |

File Menu |
|
| The File Menu has several options that help you to create your stack. |
 |
| File Menu Options |
|
| You will use the File Menu from the Main Menu bar to start a new stack, open an existing stack, and save a stack. The File Menu is where to go to Import a Background or add clip art to your background. |
| Remember that clip art is part of the background and cannot be moved around like a graphic object, you will have to erase the background with a different color by going to Edit>Erase Background and choose a color. This will erase everything on the background. |
| You can also Export a screen from a HyperStudio card to your computer and save it. |
| Print options are also done from here. Select if you want to print the current card only or all the cards in the stack. Then select how many cards will be printed on a page. |
| Slide Show. You can show all the cards in your stack by clicking on Slide Show. You can choose how you want the cards to be displayed in the slide show. This can repeat continuously or the slide show can stop at the end of the stack. The timing can also be adjusted to change every so many seconds or when you hit any key on the keyboard. Hit the Escape button on the keyboard to quit the slide show. |
| Click Exit to close out your HyperStudio stack. |

Edit Menu
|
| The Edit Menu is essential for working on the cards in your stack. |
 |
| Edit Menu Options: |
| 1. Undo Option |
| The first section under the Edit Menu options is UNDO. |
 |
| The Undo option will allow you to "undo" the last action you took when editing the card. It may say "undo painting" if you use the paint tool. It may say "undo move object" if you last moved a graphic object or text object, and so on... |
| This is very important to correcting mistakes! Remember, you MUST go directly to Edit>Undo to correct that mistake as soon as it is made. If you click anywhere else, that mistake might not be the last thing you did. For instance, if you typed on the background of the card, before you click anywhere else, whether on the card background, a graphic, or a text object- you must click on Edit>Undo first. Sometimes this can be hard to do because you may not notice the mistake. Then you will have to edit the mistake another way. |
| 2. Cut, Copy, Paste, and Clear |
The next segment of the Edit menu is Cut, Copy, Paste, and Clear. |
 |
| If you have selected an object by clicking on it, the edit options to cut, copy, and clear will be highlighted which will make these options available to use. First, click on the object, then choose cut or copy. Next, click on the background of that card or even another card and go back to Edit>Paste, and the object will be pasted to that card. You can also click on an object and select clear which will remove the object from the card. |
| Notice how after you click on the object and go to the Edit Menu again, the paste option, along with the other options are not grayed out. If any option is "grayed out" that means it is not available to use because you have not selected something that would use this option. |
 |
| TIP! You can also right-click with the mouse on any object and be able to use the options from the Edit menu. When a graphic is selected, you will see the flashing red dots around it, then you can edit the graphic. |
 |
| 3. Adding & Editing Cards to the Stack |
The next segment of the Edit Menu deals with how you can edit the card. You can make a new card, a ready made card or delete, cut or copy a card.
When you "start a new stack", you automatically get start with one card, then you need to add more cards. |
 |
New Card
Adding a new card will make a totally new card in which you have to choose a background color, import a background, or paint a background with the paint tools. You can add other things to your card background as well, such as a graphic or text object, or even a video |
 |
Ready Made Card
Adding a ready made card will make a new card that has the same background as the one you are on when you use this option. Any text boxes or graphic objects that are on the card will not be copied and will have to be added individually (copy/paste the object or go back to add a graphic object and reinsert it). If you painted the background with the paint tools, this is part of the background and will be copied. If the background is a solid color, the background will be the same color. This will save you having to use the color palette and paint bucket to re-select the color to the background so the cards will match in the stack. |
| Example: Ready-Made Card>Group Card |
| There is also a Group card option that will make changes to the card be copied to the new card if the objects repeated are checked as group objects when a new card is made with the group card option. |
|
| Moving the card: Copy/Cut/Paste Card |
| You can choose cut to remove the card or paste it somewhere else in card order. For instance, cutting card 3 and pasting it after card 5. This will change the card order from the way it was. |
| The same applies to copy the card. Say you have a card that you want to repeat later in the stack. Go to Edit>Copy and then find the place you want to put the card using the keyboard shortcut navigation keys (Ctrl and < or >), then click paste card. |
| There may be a card you decide you don't need anymore or you accidentally copied the wrong card. That is when you may use "delete" to remove the card from the stack. Be sure you want to get rid of the card because once you delete the card, you cannot get it back. |
| 4. Effects |
|
Effects is the next segment of the Edit Menu. You can customize your card background and images using different effects from this submenu.
When you see an arrow beside an option, it means that there are more choices of this option available. Just move your mouse pointer over the option with the arrow and the submenu contains command that can be used to change a card background or other images on the card. Move across and then go down with the mouse pointer. Any option that is highlighted in blue can be performed. |
 |
| This image of a bird has been flipped upside down. Flip sideways, flip upside down, or scale and rotate refer to manipulating or changing images such as the bird above. |
| Image flipped upside down |
Scale and Rotate option |
 |
 |
 |
|
| Such commands such as Beveler, Emboss, and Texturize are used on the background of the card. |
 |
You can use a selection tool to select or create a shape on the background of the
card such as a rectangle shape to make a title on the card. Then go to Edit>Effects, where you
can choose from one of the submenu commands. This image was created using the rectangle
selection tool, then changed using Edit>Effects>Beveler. |
| |
| When you use the Beveler command you will see a dialog box appear that gives you the choose of flat, inverse or both. |
 |
| Each area of the background selected is shown below using each option. |
|
This clip art image added to the background of the card can be selected using the lasso tool before adding the Beveled effect.
You have the chose of inverted or flat or both. Play with clicking on them to see how the image is affected. |
 |
|
| To remove this clip art, you must erase it since it is part of the background. You can also lasso the object with the lasso tool and use the cookie cutter option. Once the clip art or object is selected you will see a red border around the object so you can edit it using the Effects options. |
| Another way you can remove an object or clip art on the background is to erase it. Choose the same color as the background and then use the eraser tool. If you have trouble matching the color, just use the eye dropper tool and it will find that color on the colors palette. Otherwise you will have to erase the entire background using Edit>Erase Background. |
| 5. Erase Background |
The next option under the Edit menu is Erase Background.
This will allow you to completely erase everything on the current background including the color or other text that may be typed or drawn on the card background. |
 |
You can change the background color or erase what is on the entire background at any time.
Go to Edit>Erase Background and a dialog box of color choices will be displayed. Click on the desired color and then click OK. This will erase the entire card background and change the color to the one you elected. |
 |
| TIP! Remember, using Erase Background will erase anything that is on the background of the card. This command will not affect text or graphic objects added to the card from the Objects Menu. |

Move Menu |
The Move Menu allows you to move around within your stack to different cards.
Lesson 2 of this unit, Navigating will discuss using the Move Menu to how to navigate within HyperStudio and your stack. |
 |
| Move Menu Options: |
Back: This option will jump the user back to the last card visited.
Home: This option will take the user to the Home Stack.
Previous Card: This option will take the user to the card previous to the current card.
Next Card: This option will take the user to the very next card in the stack.
Last Card: This option will take the user to the very last card in the stack.
Jump to Card...: This option will allow the user to enter the number of the desired card destination.
Find Text...: This option will allow the user to search for specific cards that have text objects containing certain text.
|
Note:
The First, Next, Previous, and Last cards in the stack depend on the card order of the cards in the stack. |
| The card number increases in sequential order as each card is created. |
| To use Jump to a Card you have to put in the card number you want to go to, then you click OK and you will be taken to that card. Using the Storyboard under Extras will allow you to see what cards have which card number. |
| Besides using the Keyboard shortcuts (CRTL and > to go forward and CTRL< to go backwards in card order) using the Move menu is one of the easiest and most common ways of navigating to different cards while you are working on creating the stack. You can also use these two methods in any stack. The Move menu can only be used in a completed stack if you have access to the entire menu bar. |
