Unit 2 Adding Objects

Introduction

Under the Objects Menu, there are different "Objects" that can be added to a card within your stack.

There are also things you can specify "About This Card" and About This Stack". First let's go over how to add these three objects.

These objects are:
Text objects
Graphic objects
Buttons
We will begin by going over how to add a text objects. The next part of the lesson will go over adding graphic objects. The last part of lesson 2 will go over how to add path animation to graphic objects and manipulating graphics on the background of the card.

Part 1: Adding a Text Object

A text object will allow you to put in textual information needed for a card.

To add a text object (or text box) you must go to Objects>Add a Text Object.

When you insert the text object you will see a rectangular-shaped box with moving red dashes which are called "marching ants" in HyperStudio. You can resize the object as soon as you insert the text box, but you have to click somewhere on the card to finish inserting text object on the card

Once you click on the card to insert the text object, a "Text Appearance" dialog box will appear where you can change the color of the text in the box and the color of the background of the text object.

You can also make the text in the box scrollable or add a scroll bar to the text box. You can also have a frame border the text object or have no frame.

To make these changes, just check the box beside the attribute you want to edit. You can name your object, but you don't have to unless you use some of the New Button Actions so the NBA can know which object to "activate".

Resizing an Object

If you move the mouse cursor over the text object you will see a 4-way directional arrow that allows you to move the text object around to a desired location on the card.

4-way arrow
2-way arrow
To resize the text object, move the 4-way arrow over the border of the text object until it turns into a 2-way arrow. When the cursor turns into a 2-way arrow, hold down the mouse button and drag the red-dashed line the direction you want to make the box the size you need (in/out or up/down).
Once the text object has been inserted on the card, you can move or resize the object if you need to. If you "double-click" on the object, it will automatically bring up the Text Appearance box if you need to edit more attributes on the text object such as text color, background color, or add features or actions to the text object.

Additional options from the Text Appearance box will also allow you to:

browse for another file

Select another file
specify features about that text object
Select features
add actions from the Actions Box.

Editing the Text Style

You can edit or change the text size, type of font, text style (plain, bold, italic, or underlined), or change the alignment of the text in the text object (left, right, or centered) by clicking on the STYLE button. You can change the text color or background color of the text object from the Text Style box as well.

Text Alignment

These text objects show examples of the 3 different text alignments:

Left

Centered

Right.

To change the text alignment you can

click on the STYLE button on the Text Appearance dialog box.

TIP: Changing the alignment to Centered will change ALL of the text in the text box. If you want to specially align a specific word or phrase which is highlighted it will not change just that highlighted part, but will affect all the text in the text box.

Typing Text in the Text Object

To start typing in the text box, you have to see the blinking cursor. This line on the top left-hand side of the text box will be flashing.

That is where you will begin typing your text.

If you click on the text object and do not see the blinking cursor, you will have to click on the text tool in the Tools Palette.

Typing or Painting Text on the Card Background

The card background is the bottom layer of the card. You can add text objects, graphic objects, and buttons to the top layer of the card. Think of these objects (text, graphic, and buttons) to be "floating" over the background layer.

Anything that is put on the background of the card can not be easily removed from the card. Nor can the object be moved or copied as easily as if the same object or clip art is inserted as a graphic object (because of the layer in which the object is insert onto).
