Lesson 3: Adding Sound & Video

Introduction

Sound and video are multimedia elements that can be added to your HyperStudio stack. You can add sound and/or video to any graphic object, text object, or button inserted on the card. Sound can also be added to play as a background sound.

You may want to add sound to a text object with information that can be "heard" by clicking on the text object/box or is activated by an automatic timer to be heard as soon as the card is shown or after so many seconds.

To add sound or video to a text or graphic object, you must select the object you want to add sound or video to.

First we will go over how to add sound to a text object and a graphic object, and finally buttons. Lastly, we will add sound to the card itself as a background sound.

Adding Sound

To add sound to your card, you must have something to add it to such as a graphic object, text object, or a button. You can find these items under Objects on the Main Menu bar.
Whatever object you select to add sound to, whether it be a button, text or graphic object, will depend on the need for that object on the card. For instance, you may have a button that says "Click to Listen" to hear an introduction describing the purpose of the stack or to allow the user to hear and/or read the text on the card. A graphic may be on the card that can represent the voice "speaking".
A text object (box) can also have audio applied that will "speak" the text on the text object by clicking on the text box or using an automatic timer to have the audio heard at a specific time (as soon as the card is shown or after so many seconds). How you use sound depends on the need for the sound on that card.
This image shows how you can add a sound to graphic or a button like this speaker icon to indicate that there is something to hear such as an introduction to the stack.
Sounds can be added to graphics to animate the scene.
Access this stack to listen to the sounds added to some graphics objects.
Test Sounds Stack
You can add a sound from the HyperStudio Media Library in the Sounds folder. You can also make a recording yourself. You can use something as simple as the Windows Sound Recorder. Go to tart>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder.

Then you can browse to

add the file where ever you saved it.

You can also use any other Audio Recording Program to make a sound file such as Sound Forge to record more complex audio recordings. To add a sound from the Sounds Folder in the HyperStudio Media Library you must first click on the object or button you want to add the sound to.
The graphic will be highlighted with a red pulsing border.
You should double-click on the graphic you selected. The Actions box will appear. Then you will click on Add a Sound.
Then the Digital Audio Deck will appear where you can add a sound from the HyperStudio SAMPLES , sounds IN USE, or from DISK FILE.
If you select Disk Library, you will be taken to HyperStudio Media Library where you can find sound files from the SOUNDS folder.
You can always browse anywhere on your computer to find sound files you saved, but keep in mind that HyperStudio will not support using some files. Usually you must use .wav, .auf, .au, or midi files. MP3 files or other sound files must be converted to one of these files to use them in the stack.

You may want to add a sound you recorded yourself. Browse to find your file. Select the sound file you want, then click OPEN. Once the sound is in the Digital Audio Deck you can click PLAY to hear it. Click OK to use this sound file.

When using any sound file, whether added to an object or as background music, make sure you select "Sound stored in the stack" if the sound file is not too big.

If the sound file is very long or large in file size, then you need to have it stored in the same folder as your stack is stored and just link directly to that sound file.

You can also make the sound play as a background sound that will be heard when on this card depending on the length of the sound file

You can time when the sound is heard using Automatic Timer found on the Actions box under Things to Do.

Adding a Movie or Video

To add a movie or video file to an object, you must select the object you want to use, whether it be a text, graphic, or button.

You can double-click or right-click on the object or button so you can select what Actions you want to add, in this case adding sound.

If you are adding a video to a text object you can click on ACTIONS on the Text Appearance box.
If you are adding any actions to a graphic object, the Graphic Object Appearance box will appear where you can click on Actions to add your video.

To add a video to a button, you can use the text name or use an icon image.

When you add a button, you will go to Objects>Add a Button. Then you can type in a name for the button and use Show Name or select Show Icon. You can use the name and the icon for the button, but usually it is best to use one or the other option.

If you want to use a button, go to Objects>Add a Button. This will bring up the Button Appearance box where you can select other options. You can use an icon for the button or maybe just the name of the button (like View Movie).
You may want to pick an icon image to use. To show just the icon, check the Show Icon box. To show the button name, check the Show Name box.
So, to use a button, you go to Objects>Add a Button.

Select your options such as using the button name or an icon. Complete inserting your button by clicking anywhere on the card

After inserting the button the Button Appearance box will appear to bring up the Actions box.

Then you can add the actions you want to occur for this button, for instance, playing a movie or video.

Adding the Video

Once you click on Play a Movie or Video, you must select where you want to get the movie/video file--Disk File, Video (make your own), Laserdisc Player, or Show a Live Video Window (with a Web Cam).

You can choose Disk File where you can choose from these short clips in the QuickTime Movies folder in the HyperStudio Media Library

Or you can browse anywhere on your computer by clicking on the drop down menu

Next, select your movie clip options.

When you first add your video you can resize it or move it where you want the movie to be viewed on the card. Then you must click anywhere on the card to finished inserting the video. This action will bring up the "Movies" option box where you can select other viewing options.

You can click Try It to see how the video will look or Position to resize it again or move it somewhere else on the card.
